Termite treatment

Pest control companies have been continually refining their methods of termite treatment over the years. Termites can cause huge amounts of damage to wooden structures, so controlling them is of paramount importance in areas where they are active.

It is often very difficult to spot a termite infestation, as they eat the wood from the inside out, so by the time they have been discovered, the damage is already done. Generally, most pest control companies will now use termite bait to destroy the nest. This is a form of poison which the termites taken into their nest and which slowly kills them.

Bin bags causing waste disposal problem

We all know how long it takes for plastics to decompose. If we don’t know, then at least we should be aware that the timescale is measured in centuries, not years. So why is it, that we dispose of Bin bags so carelessly?

Unfortunately, despite there being several environmentally friendly alternatives available, we still use plastic bin bags in vast quantities. Although the contents may decompose fairly quickly, especially if it contains organic waste, the bag itself will take far longer.

Leading scientists and environmental lobbyists are now urging consumers to seek ‘green’ alternatives. Given the fact that bio-degradeable bags have been available for some time, there is no real excuse not to use them.

Climate change affecting birds

Scientists have recently stated that climate change has already showed signs of greatly affecting the habits and habitats of many species of migratory birds.

Oceanic and Hawaiian birds are thought to be most at risk. Threats to migratory birds include habitat fragmentation, genetic isolation, invasive species and water scarcity – all of which are greatly exacerbated by climate change.

The behaviour patterns of birds have always been a good barometer of the state of the environment, and some of the anomalous behaviour that scientists have seen in recent years are a clear pointer to the fact that climate change is really starting to affect their habitats.

Cashmere knitwear – why is it so soft and warm?

Cashmere knitwear is famous throughout the world for its unmatched softness and natural warmth, but what is it what gives it these unique qualities?

Cashmere clothing is produced from cashmere fibres, which in turn come from the cashmere goat, which is found in Mongolia and parts of China. The goat’s natural habitat is very hot during the day, but extremely cold at night. So the goats need to keep warm at night time while still remaining cool in the hot afternoon sun.

Due to these harsh environmental pressures, the goat has evolved its unique coat, which consists of two layers – a thick outer coat of rough guard hairs and a soft inner coat of cashmere fibres. This gives it the flexibility to remain comfortable at both extremes of temperature.

Cleantech – delivering tangible benefits

Cleantech” is perhaps not a term that most people would recognise. It refers to the practice of using resources more efficiently and finding new, more sustainable sources of power for the future. It has been growing in prominence in recent times as the technologies behind it become cheaper and more cost-effective.

Solar energy and in particular wind energy are probably the most visible aspects of cleantech at the moment. Wind farms are being erected all over the country – and even off-shore – and solar power technology has become much more efficient and economically viable that it used to be, making it more useful than ever. Cleantech looks set to have a bright future in the UK as businesses and government become more aware of the environment.

Renewable energy sources provide sustainable power

Renewable energy sources such as wind, solar power, rain, tides and geothermal heat are replenished naturally and provide a sustainable, inexhaustible source of power, unlike conventional fossil fuels, which will one day run out.

Already, approximately 20% of global energy use comes from renewable energy sources. Over half of this energy is used to produce electricity. Roughly 50% of renewable energy supplies come from conventional biomass sources such as wood, but new sources such as light, wind and rain are now being utilised more than ever. Wind power, for example, is currently increasing by 30% every year.

The growth of the renewable energy industry is driven by climate change concerns, the ever-increasing price of oil and strong governmental support.

The science of bird control

Bird control is an important issue for many businesses. Birds can be a real nuisance when they settle on a site, causing noise pollution, health issues from their toxic droppings and even attacking people when disturbed. Bird control technology has improved in recent years, and there are now several methods of ridding your premises of problem birds.

Bird points use a series of steel spikes to prevent birds from settling on structures, while netting will prevent birds from accessing enclosed spaces. Hawks can also be used as a natural method of keeping bird populations down – specially trained birds can be flown in invested areas to scare away any birds that might otherwise settle there.

Biofuel uptake on the increase

Biofuel has grown increasingly popular in recent years for a number of reasons, including the rising price of conventional fuels.

The most common biofuel currently in use in Europe is biodiesel. In fact, in some countries biodiesel is actually cheaper than conventional diesel. It is extracted from oils or fats through a process called transesterification and strongly resembles mineral diesel.

To use, biodiesel must be mixed with mineral diesel. It can be used in all conventional diesel engines, where it burns more efficiently than standard diesel and even, as a natural solvent, cleans the engine as it passes through which helps the engine to run more smoothly.
