How silica gel works

You might not think it about it much, but silica gel is actually pretty amazing stuff. You’ve probably seen it in those little packages you find in electronic equipment and camera cases, where it’s used to keep moisture from damaging delicate goods.

It gets its desiccant properties from its unique internal structure – it’s actually made up of a series of microscopic interconnected chamber. Thanks to this structure, it has a huge surface area in relation to its size – believe it or not, a single gram of silica gel has a surface area of 800 square meters.

Water molecules are drawn into the gel because its huge surface gives it a lower vapour pressure than the air around it.
