Significant Discoveries
Significant discoveries made over the centuries
As the human race has developed, so has our understanding of ourselves and of the world around us. In terms of our knowledge, minor discoveries are made every day so we’re always moving forward, however throughout history famous scientists have discovered something highly significant and science has taken a huge leap forward.
Why the dinosaurs were made extinct
In 1980 Walter Alvarez found high levels of iridium in rock samples taken from across the globe, providing firm evidence that the extinction of dinosaurs was caused by an asteroid. Iridium is commonly found in asteroids and was discovered in rock layers estimated to be 65 million years old, a date that coincides with the mass extinction of dinosaurs.
The discovery of insulin
Back in the 1920′s, scientist Frederick Banting discovered a hormone called insulin, which helped to balance blood sugar levels in diabetes patients, allowing them to live normal lives. Before insulin was discovered, diabetes sufferers died a slow and certain death.
The discovery of the neutron
James Chadwick discovered the existence of neutrons, which alongside protons and electrons comprised the atom. This discovery dramatically changed the atomic model and accelerated further discoveries in atomic physics.
